4 years old, Where does the time go?

Emily's 4 year check up was a huge success!

Weight: 36 lbs = 58%
Height: 3' 5 1/4" inches = 80% (Oh Yeah!)

Unfortunately she did have to get 4 shots, but she was such a trooper and didn't cry until the very last one, the MMR, the nurse said that everyone cries with that one because it stings really bad, with that Emily got to have 2 stickers when we were done. We are very proud of her! :)

Emily really loves science, she even asked for a telescope for her birthday, Aunt Sue got her a telescope/mircoscope for a present and she loves it. She can't wait for it to get warm out so she can ride her scooter on the sidewalks. She is still a nonstop chatter box and loves to tell stories, long stories. :) She still wont eat eggs, but will try chicken every now and then, which is a step forward. She knows all her letters, upper and lower case, and we are working on the sounds they make. And also practicing writing them. She still loves going to Miss Norma's house everyday, she is now the older kid in the house and loves to teach and help with all the little ones.

Her hemangioma is still in the same stage it has been for a few years, meaning it still has active blood flow. She is still on her Propranalol and will have another steroid treatment in April. We are just waiting for the "trigger" to turn off in her body so the hemangioma will stop. But for now it is a waiting game, and you can't even tell it is there most days due to the medication. :)

I vow to keep this blog updated more often now that it will be Spring and we can get out a do more things. Check back soon!

When my Grandma Beth was little this was her doll. She named it Baby Beth. My mommy and Aunt Kristin played with her too when they were a little girl. Now it is my turn. I take good care of her and she sleeps with me in my big girl bed.

Renaissance Festival

We took an impromptu trip to the Renaissance Festival on Sunday. We had a great time. Grama Jan came before she went back home to Reed City. Mom and Dad were nice enough to buy me a dress-up costume and headband. I also got my hand dipped in wax. With purple sparkles. I love purple, it's my favorite color.

Wow! What a busy time we've been having. I love having Dad home for the summer. We go swimming and go for bike rides. Last week Mom took time off work and we went on a vacation. We drove far far away to Reed City to visit Grama Jan and Poppa, and Grandpa. Dad did a lot of fishing with Grandpa and I did my own fishing with Grama, Poppa, and Mom. We also took a day trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes. I got to climb the BIG hill and went to the beach, I want to go back!!

Hemangioma update: The dermatologist doesn’t need to see her back in the office until she starts Kindergarten. YEAH!! The hemangioma is in the plateau stage. Which means it is not growing, nor is it shrinking yet. For now we just keep an eye on it. It will change with her mood and with the weather, but for the most part you’d never know that she has it.
Other: We have found a few times in her three years that she is allergic to peaches. Though it is not every time she eats them. So the pediatrician has suggested we take her to an allergist. It could be an allergy that is dormant until she exposed to other elements. Weird I know, so we will find out the answer.

Growing up so fast.

I can't believe in three weeks, Emily will be three years old. Time has flown by so fast. It seems like yesterday that James and I brought her home from the hospital. Before we know it, we will be taking her to her first day of school. She has grown up a lot in the last year, as you know if you are a regular reader of our blog. She is now ready for a "bigger girl" bed, which we will let her pick out her own bedding set for her birthday. She is requesting purple with butterflies, so we'll see what we can find. She is also asking for a baby sister for her birthday. It is very hard to explain to her why she can't have one, but we are doing our best. I do believe she is a little young for the birds and bees talk. Though she is not too young to learn how to play on a computer. See video below. She is growing like a weed and is already wearing 3T clothes and some 4T things. She is still a picky eater when it comes to meat, but she is brave and will try new foods. Her vocabulary is remarkable, there aren't too many things she says that we don't understand. And she talks A LOT!!!! She is like having a little friend with me everywhere I go, we can talk about anything. Her hemangioma is at a stand still. She is no longer on medication, and we see the doctor in a few weeks for a check up. Once we know more, we'll keep you posted.

Up North

This weekend we went up north to see my Grama and Poppa and so my Grandpa could take me ice fishing. It was so much fun, cold, but fun. I wasn't too patient waiting for all the fish. EWWWWW, did you know they are slimy? I didn't want to touch any. After Mom and I left the ice, Daddy and Grandpa caught a lot.

While at Grama's I slept in my own room in the big girl bunk bed. Everyone was so proud and excited for me. I like sleeping in there. On Sunday Poppa took all of us to eat pancakes, they were yummy.

My Grandpa gave me a guitar. I'm still a little small for it, but Daddy is going to learn to play so he can teach me when I am big, maybe 5.

Busy Weekend

What a busy weekend. Saturday mommy took me to GeGe's house for lunch and I got to see my Grandma too. But we had to leave so I could make it to my playdate at Harper's house. She has a fun house, we had a great time. Then on Sunday, mommy and daddy took me to the movies!!! We saw Princess and the Frog and we ate popcorn and yucky/yummy candy. (Mom's Note: Yucky/yummy candy = Sour patch kids, she would bite into each one and say yucky, but would keep eating it. She must of eaten half the bag) Here are some pictures of my playdate at Harper's house.

Emily has discovered magnets, thanks to Caillou. (more on him later) Here are some pictures of where Emily has found where magnets will stick. Wood vs. Metal. Another lesson is the making. Besides these photos, she has found that they stick to the base of the lamp in the living room, obviously the fridge, but she loves to go around the house finding new things that are metal to stick them on.

My favorite part of the day...
When my husband and I are ready for bed, he always goes into Emily's room to check on her. He puts her covers back on, arranges her fuzzy bunnys and baby doll, kisses her and whispers to her "love you baby girl". He walks out shutting the door behind him. But it is the small loving smile he has on his face that makes my heart melt EVERY night. I'm not sure if he knows that I watch his nightly ritual, but if you are reading this...you are a good dad James, I love you!

Mommy and I went to the zoo last Friday. It was so much fun. We decided to go after all the kids went back to school. So we had the zoo all to ourselves almost. We walked around for HOURS seeing everything multiple times. My favorite is the lions and penguins. I made mommy go back over and over again to see the lions hoping that they would roar, but they didn't. I can't wait to go back.

... and boy was she surprised at how grown up I am. She really wishes we lived closer so she could see me more often. We told her she can move into to the guest room if she ever retires. But she would miss Poppa Bob too much. We did a lot while she was here. She took me shopping and a LONG walk looking at garage sales. She even took me to church. I loved it there, we sang and listened very carefully. I might go back the next time Grama comes down. Here is a video of Grama working with me on my flash cards. I know all my colors and shapes. And now I am practicing my numbers and letters. (please ignore daddy's legs at the end of the video, he forgot how to turn off the filming mode on the camera...heehee)

Well….it’s official, I AM POTTY TRAINED! I feel like such a big girl now in my big girl panties. Mommy and Daddy are so proud of me. I still wear my princess diaper (pull-ups) at nap time and bedtime, just in case.

I’ve been enjoying my summer vacation. Daddy is home most of the time with me and I visit with Miss Norma twice a week. My Daddy bought me a pool, a big pool. But I don’t have my little pool anymore. (Emily says this all the time. She also wakes up every morning, and the first thing she says is “I swim now?”) Here are some pictures/video of me swimming by myself.

Hemangioma update.
Emily is now two years old, which is past the average age for the hemangioma to stop growing. Because she has been through enough steroid injection and laser treatments, the doctor has informed us of a new treatment serendipitously discovered in France. After much thought, weighing the alternative of having it still grow, and the side effects, we opted to try the new treatment. Beta-Blockers used in hypertension are now being used in hemangioma treatment. It is still a very new concept, only been used for about 9 months. Emily has been on them for a week and I can't believe what I am witnessing, the hemangioma not only has gotten smaller, the coloring is hardly visible. I truly support the new treatment in which doctors and researchers are trying to make the new first course of action for hemangiomas instead of oral steroids. Because this new medication does effect the heart, Emily is required to visit a cardiologist for an initial visit and to see her pediatrician once a week for a heart rate and blood pressure monitoring. These are just as precautions, none of the other patients have had any dangerous side effects. We will keep you posted on her progress. Until then, no more people asking us if she fell on her nose.

Spring Break...Here I come! (or not)

Cancun?….Panama City?….South Padre Island?… NOPE, not for me this year. Mom and Dad say that I am still too young for Spring Break ’09. I guess I’ll have to wait for Spring Break ’27. By then I’ll be at least 20 years old and will be able to enjoy myself, sans parents. So instead, I get to spend the whole week with my daddy. YEAH!!! I think he has some fun stuff planned for us. Maybe a visit to see Mom at work. I do have to see my plastic surgeon that week, my hemangioma seems to have a mind of it’s own and doesn’t want to stop being active. So far I am enjoying being 2. My doctor says I am in perfect shape. All 25 pounds/32.5 inches of me. Next big adventure…potty training. I really like to use my potty chair, so my dad says that this summer I will be diaper free. We’ll see. I’m not ready for my toddler bed yet, I still enjoy the bars of crib life. Which is fine by mom and dad. I’ll keep you all posted on future in devours. — Emily

Sorry it has been so long since my mom has updated my blog. I haven't had many pictures taken of me lately. I've been under the weather a lot. From 8 days of stomach flu to a weird viral infection that came with a rash. I am finally all better and ready for Spring! My birthday is in almost two weeks, I can't wait. I'm going to be two! I'm growing up fast, I now weigh 25 lbs and I am so tall. I'm learning how to play basketball, so I think that makes my dad excited. He's counting on a college scholarship and maybe some WNBA pay. HaHa.

All of us are anticipating the birth of my cousin, Javus Drew, due March 16. Uncle Marcus and Aunt Cynthia are all ready for him to arrive. And I also have a baby girl cousin due in July, Uncle Josh and Aunt Lori live in Alabama, so I hope they are good with sending pictures online.

Well... I plan on doing some fun things once the weather gets nice, so more pictures are coming soon.

Jekyll and Hyde
Apparently, Emily is a totally different kid at daycare. She eats everything and anything put in front of her. If I make the same meal at home, she won't touch it and throw a fit. She also plays the "baby card" there, if that make sense. She is so grown up at home, but at daycare she wants everyone to do things for her and treat her like a baby. At home she wants to use the potty all the time, at daycare, hasn't even used the word "potty".

I would love to hear your stories of how your child has different personalities with different surroundings.

Emily's Best bud Zak has a new brother. Nolan Philip Kukuk was born October 11. He came a month early and is in perfect health. Emily loves to give him hugs and kisses. She is very good with babies.

Saturday was our first Toddler trip to Urgent Care. We decided to have some fun on Saturday and take Emily to Bounce House. She was having a great time going from each bouncy activity. While alone in a bigger jumper a few older kids joined her. One wasn't paying attention and bounced into Em and knocked her down falling on her. She cried, but not too bad. It was getting to be nap time anyway, so we went home. Once we got home, Emily went down for her nap. Waking up an hour later, she wouldn't put any weight on her right leg/foot. She kept telling us "Oww, Oww". After our own self exam, James and I decided to take her in to get it x-rayed. Nothing was broken that they could see. But we need to keep on eye on it in case she injured a growth plate. She seems to be fine, she is favoring the foot and toes, but it doesn't stop her from getting around.

Friday night Mommy and Daddy took me on a weird adventrure. I had to get all dressed up, get lots of pictures taken and then go around asking people for candy. It was actually quite fun. Mommy would take me up to a door, I would say "teetteet" and they put candy in my bucket. Then I politely said "tank-oo".
Mom's note: Emily did awesome... she did exactly as she said above, but once we stepped off the porch she would take out that piece of candy and carry it to the next house. Once her bucket was too heavy, she dragged it. She wouldn't let us touch the bucket, it was all hers. Or as she says "Miiine!" After awhile we had to distract her to get some of the candy out and stuff my coat pockets, just so she could carry her bucket again. She had a great time, next year will be even better when she can actually keep up with Jillian and Julia.

Not really a lesson this week...more of a "What the heck!"

Becuase Dad is at his football games on Thursday nights, Emily and I eat out. This Thursday it was McDonalds. I place Em's order of a cheeseburger Happy Meal with fries and a chocolate milk. My turn, I'll have the #10 value meal with a Coke, please. Sorry ma'am ...we are temporarily out of Coke today.

WHAT THE HECK!!!! OUT OF COKE! Good thing it wasn't a Sunday morning for all those hung over people who need their McDonald's fountain Coke to cure that hangover. I was so disturbed for the rest of the evening, how could McDonald's be out of Coke??

Emily said her first sentence today...
Every morning we do the same routine. After we get dressed, we come to kitchen and get our cup of milk to take in the car on the way to daycare. Well, this morning, she threw me a curve. I handed her the cup of milk and she said "no, juice, please". I was so thrown back that I said "You don't want your milk?", she replied again, "no, juice, please". So I filled a different cup with some apple juice, handed it to her, and go the best response ever, "Thank you". I was so excited...it was like having a real conversation.

Emily has discovered the fuzz between her toes when she takes her socks off. For those of you who know Emily...she doesn't sit still. She will sit for twenty minutes searching and examining every toe she has.

Doctors, Doctors, Doctors

I had my 18 month check up, and Dr. B says I am perfect. I weigh 20lbs. 6oz. and am 31 inches tall. And I only had to have one shot, the flu shot. So now I don't need to go back until I am 2!

I also saw the plastic surgeon for one of my nose treatments. We were at the hospital a long time. They accidently went out of order, so instead of being first, I was last. Daddy was very impatient which made me impatient. But it all turned out OK in the end. They only did lasers this time. So my nose is a little bruised and swollen, but my hemangioma is not growing. Now the doctors will just keep checking up on me every couple months to see how I am doing. But he doesn't think I will need any reconstructive surgery. YEAH!!!!

Since so many new things happen every day with Emily, I'm going to try and make this a weekly entry.

First entry:
Emily will eat anything...with ketchup!

I haven't been able to get Emily to eat chicken or eggs, ironically...the two foods I could not eat while pregnant. This week, I got Emily to eat at least a few bites of chicken with a big blog of ketchup to dip it in.

Mom and I have been spending a lot of time together. It’s FOOTBALL season. Dad is a football coach, if some of you didn’t know. So every night he has practice and Thursday and Friday are game nights. (Emily’s new favorite word is football). I went to go watch daddy coach, but we didn’t stay long. Apparently daughters aren’t allowed on the field during the game, so Mom made us leave after my constant attempts to get on the field. (She was like a crazed teen trying to get on the stage at a NKOTB concert. Hehe)

Some good news…. I have a new cousin. Lucas Lee Leusby was born September 5. Because Lucas lives in Alabama with my Uncle Ryan and Jasmine, I haven’t met him yet, nor have we seen any pictures. (Ryan just bought a new digital camera and is trying to upload them to a computer for all of us) Daddy says if they don’t come to Michigan for Christmas, we will go see them on his Spring Break from school. I guess that means no Cancun for me this year, still too young for that. My Grama Jan is leaving October 5 to go visit them, but not before spending a little bit of time with me. She is going to babysit while Mom takes Dad out for his birthday. The big 32!!!! That’s a lot more candles than I had at my party.

Next week I turn 18 months. WOW does time fly, it seems like yesterday I was floating around in my nice warm waterbed in Mommy’s belly. I go to the doctor on Thursday for my checkup. I sure hope they don’t give me any shots. (They will.) And I will get to see how much weight I’ve gained. My next nose surgery is October 1. It hasn’t grown since my last treatment, so this time they will probably just do the lasers. (Then they will decide if she needs reconstructive surgery or not.)
